How to Behave on a First Date – 10 Tips

how (not) to behave on your first dateIf you are going on a first date it is only natural to feel a little bit nervous. Whether you’ve met that person through an online dating site, through work, or through a friend of a friend, you will probably be wondering what the other person will think of you, whether or not there will be a spark between you both and how well you’ll get on.

Here are a few tips on how to behave on a first date. Reading the following tips will give you one less thing to worry about while on a date so you can focus on the most important thing – relaxing and enjoying yourself.

Tip #1 – Be There on Time
Ok, it is really obvious, but still worth a mention as it’s just good manners. You don’t want to leave your date standing around like a spare part looking like they have been stood up, do you? Make sure you allow yourself plenty of time and if you are going to be more than a few minutes late call or send a text.

Tip #2 – Don’t Talk Too Much About Yourself
Not everyone likes to talk about themself, but if you are one of these people that do, try to make sure that you spend an equal amount of time listening to the other person. Sometimes people talk too much when they are nervous, so if this sounds like you, be aware of this and be sure to reign yourself in if you find yourself waffling!

Tip #3 – Don’t Give Too Much Away
Everyone likes a bit of mystery and intrigue in their lives. As tempting as it may be, don’t give everything away about yourself on a first date. Sure, if your date asks you questions, you’ll want to answer them, but you don’t need to go into all the tiny details. If you both like each other there will be plenty of time for that later.

Tip #4 – Steer Clear of Taboo Subjects
There are certain subjects that you probably don’t want to get into on the first date. For example you may not want to get into a detailed discussion on religion (unless of course you met on a religious dating website). You definitely want to stay away from talking about your ex and you shouldn’t really get into political discussions. I’m not saying that these subjects are not ok to discuss on dates in general, it’s just the first date that you want to avoid getting into anything to heavy.

Tip #5 – Be Yourself
You want your date to like you for being you, not because you are pretending to be someone that you or not. So try and act as natural as possible from the start. If you don’t you will most likely get found out after a few dates.

Tip #6 – Keep it Positive
Even if you are feeling a bit down on the day of your date, try to be as upbeat and positive as you can. Most people are turned off by negativity so stay away from moaning about your work, your friends or your health for at least the first few dates.

Tip #7 – Don’t Make Rude Jokes
There’s nothing wrong with rude jokes – I am quite a fan of them myself, but your date may not necessarily share your sense of humour. For that reason it is best to hold off the rude joke telling until you have a feel for their type of humour.

Tip #8 – Be Polite
If your date turns out to be the most boring person you’ve met in years, or you simply don’t fancy them, don’t just rush off at the earliest opportunity. At least stay with them for a couple of drinks and just put it down to dating paractise.

Tip #9 – Don’t Eat Too Much
If you are on a restaurant date, remember you are there to get to know your date, not to scoff as much food as you possibly can :)

Tip #10 – Have Fun!
This is probably the most important tip of all! Try to enjoy the date and have some fun. Even if you do feel nervous, the worst thing that can happen is that the two of you don’t get on and decide not to see each other again. Do your best to enjoy your date and even if it doesn’t work out, you’ll have had a good time.

First Date Good Signs

first date good signsThe first date can create a lot of pressure on both parties as both of you really want it to go well. Sometimes, it can be hard to judge whether a first date is going to translate into a second date or it will just be a one-off first date. First date good signs can include -

Positive body language – If your date is mirroring the same gestures as you then that is a good sign that the date is going well. Another positive sign is if your date leans towards you when you are speaking. A date that nods and tilts their head to the side as you are talking indicates your date is paying attention and listening to what you have to say.

Flirty signs – First date good signs includes flirting from both parties. Smiling, extended eye contact and the brushing of the leg or touching of the arm means the date is going well. Generally, people don’t touch people unless they are interested in the other person!

Focus of attention is on you – A date that keeps their attention focused on you throughout the whole date is a good sign. If they are constantly checking their phone, looking at other tables of people, not really responding then that means the date is not going too well. However, if they are listening, responding and you have their undivided attention then they are positive signs.

The conversation flows – Having flowing good conversation means you are connecting with the other person on the first date. If the conversation stagnates and you run out of things to say then that is probably not a good thing. When both parties have endless things to talk about then that is a sign the date is going well.

The date is lasting a while – If both parties like each on a first date then you would want to spend as much time as possible with the other person. If your date lasts from lunch to evening then that is a good sign as opposed to a date that is either cut off short or does not last that long.

Planning for the next date – A first date that has gone well will end by your date suggesting a specific date to meet up (eg what are you doing next Thursday night?) rather than a generic “I’ll call you”. If you find that both of you talk about doing particular things together in the future during the date then that is a good sign you both see a future in the relationship.

Everyone who goes on a first date wants it to be a good experience. First date good signs can be indicators that there is a likelihood that the other person likes you. Be relaxed and enjoy yourself on your first date then if a second date comes out it then you must have been doing something right!

Creative First Date Ideas

Creative first date ideasAre you looking for creative first date ideas? The first date can bring a bit of pressure particularly if you have been assigned the role as organiser!

Creative first date ideas need to be to be interesting without pushing the boundaries too much, as you don’t want to scare off your potential love interest with an out there first date!

An example of creative first date ideas can include;

Bowling
Who doesn’t love bowling?! It’s fun, active and allows you to see how competitive (or uncompetitive) they can be. You may be really impressed by their bowling skills and if you really need help (or pretend to need help) with bowling, they can give you a demonstration and show you how it’s done. It also gives you something to talk about, so there are less likely to be awkward silences.

Ice-skating
You either have people that can ice-skate or who are just more adept at getting their behind wet. This is a blessing in disguise as the one who can ice-skate has the opportunity to help and assist the one who is less co-ordinated. You never know, they may end up literally falling on and for you!

Have a Picnic in the park
A romantic setting for two allows the opportunity to really get to know your date. Bring an assortment of delicious food and wine and the chance to have good conversation whilst admiring the beautiful park setting.

Visit the zoo
It’s always exciting to see different and exotic animals particularly if you can share the experience with your first date. Admire the gentleness of the elephant, the playful nature of the monkeys and the scary spiders. If conversation comes to a lull, just make a comment on one of the animals!

Take in a river cruise
Why not take a ride down the river and take in the scenery of the surroundings and of course your first date. It will give you a chance to relax, have some good conversation and also get some fresh air outside on the deck if you’re starting to get sweaty palms!

Visit an amusement park
Get the adrenalin going and ride the scary rides at the amusement park or go on a nice relaxing ride on the Ferris Wheel. Be a kid again and have fun with your first date. Eat some candy floss together and have a go at scoring a big stuffed animal for your date at one of the amusement park games!

Go to a festival together
Different festivals like the Notting Hill Carnival are always so much fun. You have the opportunity to experience some music, dancing and amazing food during the day and if things go really well, continue the date into the wee hours of the night!

Good First Date Questions

Good First Date QuestionsThe lead up to the first date can bring on a mixture of emotions as you prepare to meet that special someone that may ultimately be the person that you spend the rest of your life with!

The key to leaving a positive impression is to ask good first date questions and to engage your date in conversation that is thoughtful, interesting and insightful. Some of these questions may include the following;

What are your hobbies and interests?
To get a sense of whether you and your date are compatible, you should share a few similar hobbies and interests. Shared experiences together are important to a relationship so you should be able to do activities that you both enjoy.

What is your dream job?

People often have certain aspirations of what they would love to do as a job if they are not in their dream job already. This is a question that should light up your first date’s eyes and get them talking allowing you to see what really inspires them.

Tell me about your family
Do they come from a loving and close family or are they are a bit dysfunctional? How many siblings do they have and what are the relationships like between them? The answers will give you bit of an insight into the values that they hold and the sort of upbringing that they had.

What do you like to look for in a guy / girl?

Keep a mental note of whether you fit the criteria of what the other person is after. Hopefully, you will tick most or all of their boxes! If not, you may have to have a serious think about whether to pursue things further.

What happened with your last relationship?
Ask at least one tough question on your first date! Gently probe what happened and whether or not it had left a lasting impact. They may have had their heart broken and are still pining for their last love. You don’t want to be caught up with someone who has not truly gotten over their last relationship or has still resentment and anger inside them.

Good first date questions can either make or break the first meeting between two people who are looking for love. Making a good impression on the first date will lead you to a second date, third date and eventually a long-lasting relationship. The most important thing is to enjoy yourself on the first date. Happy dating!
